Tech leaders frame AGI as salvation and the Singularity as secular rapture. What happens when billionaires start speaking like messiahs?

Sam Altman talks about AGI the way Moses talked about the Promised Land. This is not a coincidence. When the OpenAI CEO writes that artificial general intelligence will "elevate humanity" and deliver us from scarcity, he is not describing a product roadmap. He is prophesying.

In 2024, Altman published an essay titled "The Gentle Singularity" that read less like a technical forecast and more like a sermon. He promised that AI would soon cure diseases, eliminate poverty, and unlock human potential at scales previously imagined only in religious texts. Consider the rhetorical patterns. Elon Musk has described artificial intelligence as "summoning the demon" while simultaneously positioning himself as humanity's potential savior through Neuralink brain interfaces. In a 2023 company presentation, he spoke of creating a "digital god" and warned that not developing AI fast enough would itself be catastrophic.
