Digital SAT Format

The SAT is a digital test delivered via the Bluebook app using a two-stage multistage adaptive design. The total testing time is 2 hours and 14 minutes.

Reading and Writing Section Structure

This section consists of two separately timed modules of 32 minutes each. There are 54 questions total (27 per module), including operational and pretest questions.

Multistage Adaptive Testing

A retired TOEFL test format in which your performance on the first stage determined the difficulty of later stages. The current TOEFL iBT Listening section is linear, so all test takers see the same question set.

Passage Length and Format

Each SAT Reading and Writing passage set includes either a single passage or a passage pair, often accompanied by a table, graph, or other informational graphic. On the current digital SAT, passages are about 25 to 150 words each and are grouped by module into content areas such as Literature, History/Social Studies, and Science.

Navigation Rules
Back
Students can move backward and forward within a single module to change answers. However, once time expires for a module, students cannot return to it.
